Professor Sir Rory Collins has been awarded the Buchanan Medal for distinguished contributions to the biomedical sciences.
Professor Sir Rory Collins, Chair of the Board at Protas, has been awarded the Royal Society’s Buchanan Medal for his leadership of practice-changing cardiovascular trials and of UK Biobank, as part of a pioneering career in biomedical sciences.
Sir Rory is one of the world’s most experienced and acclaimed clinical triallists. A leading epidemiologist who studies how to prevent and treat chronic disease in large population-based studies, he was instrumental in the International Study of Infarct Survival (ISIS) trials of treatments for acute myocardial infarction and the Heart Protection Study (HPS) into statins.
Since 2001, he has been Principal Investigator and Chief Executive of UK Biobank – a unique biomedical resource that involves half a million participants and enables scientific research into a broad range of diseases.
Sir Rory has been a Protas Board Member since our inception in 2021, with overall responsibility for the direction and management of Protas, as we deliver on our mission of transforming the global clinical trials landscape.
Sir Rory said: “I am delighted to receive the Buchanan Medal. This award recognises the importance of clinical trials that change routine care worldwide and prevent many premature deaths, and the ways in which we create better ways to diagnose, prevent and treat many different diseases.
“None of this would have been possible without the extraordinarily altruistic participants in our studies and the incredible teams who make exceptional science happen.”
