Protas appoints Dr Marcelo Vaz and Michael Biron, strengthening our leadership as we expand our services and technology offering across the clinical trials ecosystem.

We are delighted to announce the appointment of Dr Marcelo Vaz as Chief Medical Officer and Michael Biron as Vice President, Clinical Solutions.
Marcelo joins our Executive Team with more than 25 years’ experience spanning clinical practice, academia, pharmaceutical medicine and global clinical development.
As Chief Medical Officer, he will lead scientific and medical strategy, helping to expand our capabilities in trial strategy, design and planning, while supporting clients to deliver more efficient, evidence-driven clinical trials.
He will work closely with the technology team to further develop Cantata, our end-to-end trial platform – a core product in enabling transformation at scale.
Prior to joining Protas, Marcelo served as Vice President of Medical Services at TMC Pharma Services, where he led the expansion of the company’s medical services portfolio.
He also held leadership roles at ICON and PRA Health Sciences.
Michael joins Protas in the newly created role of Vice President, Clinical Solutions, reflecting our focus on growing our commercial reach and strategic partnerships.
Based in the United States, he will lead the development of global relationships with biopharmaceutical, clinical research and academic organisations, creating new opportunity to design and deliver higher-quality, faster and more streamlined clinical trials, with better technology through Cantata.
A commercial leader with 20 years’ experience, Mike brings expertise across business development, strategic partnerships, operations and growth.
Before joining Protas, he was Senior Director of Strategic Solutions at Science 37, specialising in decentralised clinical trials, and was CEO and Co-founder of Altis Biosystems, where he helped build and scale innovative biotechnology.
Prof Sir Martin Landray, Chief Executive Officer, Protas, said:
“Marcelo and Mike are excellent additions to Protas and will help us support even more organisations to run smarter clinical trials for the benefit of patients worldwide.
“Marcelo brings deep scientific, medical and clinical development expertise that will strengthen our ability to design trials that answer the questions that matter most. Mike’s experience building strategic partnerships across the life sciences sector will help us extend the reach of our technology and consultancy services to organisations looking for a better, faster and more efficient way to deliver clinical research.
“Together, they will play a key role in accelerating our growth and advancing our mission to transform how clinical trials are designed and delivered.”
Dr Marcelo Vaz, Chief Medical Officer, said:
“Protas’ work strongly resonates with principles that have guided me throughout my career. Clinical development does not need to become more complex to become better. Quite the opposite. Good science starts with asking the right questions and generating reliable evidence to answer them.
“Protas’ approach uniquely combines smart trial design, operational excellence and innovative technology to remove complexity and achieve clear answers. Ultimately, our work enables better clinical decision-making, helping to deliver better treatments to patients. I am thrilled to be working with Martin and the team to deliver on this mission.”
Michael Biron, Vice President, Clinical Solutions, said:
“Across the industry, there is growing recognition that clinical trials need to become simpler, faster and more focused on what truly matters. Protas is uniquely positioned to help organisations achieve that goal through its combination of deep trial design expertise and technology innovation.
“I’m excited to join a team that is challenging conventional approaches to clinical development and helping sponsors, clinical research organisations and the broader clinical market run better studies. By building strong partnerships and aligning around shared goals, we have a significant opportunity to accelerate the development of new treatments and bring them to patients sooner.”
